Early Spring

I am thankful for unusually warm weather in February . . .
I am thankful for children who can't wait to get outside each day to play :)

(*and for their daddy who is always game to toss a ball when he arrives home from work - playing with the kids until it's too dark to see)

Strolling Along

Emory Ann has a new trick: she's strolling!

Little one has been pulling up to a stand, cruising along the sofa, bravely shifting weight from holding a cabinet to grabbing for a sibling . . . and now she's walking along pushing a stroller!
(and quite expertly too!).

She's moving right along for a 10-1/2 month old.
We're so proud of our girl - and she's quite pleased with herself ;)

13 Years

The Valentine child who first made us parents is leading us into our next stage . . . the era of teenagers!

Happy 13th Birthday Hendrick!

Hendrick is our leader of the pack, voracious book reader, laid-back, critter catcher, magician, future herpetologist, nature boy, late sleeper, mumbler, kitchen helper (he makes a mean poppyseed chicken casserole!), wood whittler, car model builder, big vocabulary speaker, low key, walking encyclopedia, nature journal keeper, chess player, not-a-diaper-changer, motivated chore money earner, jelly bean fan, gift giver, easily agitated big brother, bottom-less-pit eater, baby holder, size-13-shoe, Latin student, alone-time-seeker, exploring hiker, organizer, baseball card and Lego collector - and he's now a teenager!

(Hendrick in 2004 and in 2009)

"My name is Hendrick, and I am the guinea pig of the house. It can be very interesting, but on the other hand it can be difficult. As the oldest and I have to do more school and chores each year. Some of the better parts of being a teenager are that I get to watch more movies and get to stay up later than usual."

*We want to raise up boys who become real men with a vision, a code of conduct, and a strong faith.  Becoming a teenager is a big milestone - a transition time from boy to manhood.  This birthday was marked with a celebration, special gift, and a charge from dad for "Young Family Men."  We're so proud of the young man Hendrick is becoming.

Fides Fortis (strong faith)
Intellectus Fortis (strong mind)
Corpus Fortis (strong body)
Cor Forte (strong heart)

Semper Virilis (Always Manly)

For his 13th birthday, Mike took Hendrick out for a nice dinner downtown at 620 State.  (Hendrick opted for shrimp over steak!).
As a family, we celebrated Hendrick's birthday (and Valentine's Day) with heart decorations, pancake breakfast, Skyline Chili lunch, Valentine Cookies (baked, decorated, and delivered to neighbors), America's Funniest Home Videos, homemade pizzas, and a homemade ice cream cookie cake (yum!).

Happy Birthday to our boy!  We're preparing ourselves for many mornings our teenager sleeping-in :)

*Mama's still taller than Hendrick, but not for long!  If his shoe size is any indication, Hendrick has a lot of growth still to come (size 13!).
