Recital 2020

As with everything this season, our beautiful dancers' Recital looked a bit different in 2020.

The studio was very creative, continuing weekly classes online during the Covid-19 social distancing and stay-at-home orders (for March, April, and May).  For a few weeks in June, when Ohio began allowing businesses to reopen, the girls were able to return to the studio wearing masks, having temperature checks, using plenty of hand sanitizer, drive-through drop-off and pick-ups, and keeping to their individual taped squares on the dance floor.
At the end of June, wearing costumes, each class was able to record their Recital dance  :)

We fixed hair and make-up, and dressed in costume, and then waited in the car in the studio lot for their recording slot.

This has been a different season, and a different recital experience.

Rather than performing for an audience on stage under the big lights, the girls performed their routines in front of 3 cameras in studio.  The recorded performances will then be compiled to create a "Recital video."
I can't wait to see these routines!

This was Emmy's first dance recital!
. . . Addy's 2nd, Dabney's 3rd, Maclaren's 5th, and Maegli and Hiwot's 9th.
The show must go on :)

We did stop for ice cream after their recorded performances (enjoying it outside, of course :)

Maegli and Hiwot danced a lyrical routine to "Good Riddance" a Green Day cover.
Emory and Addison danced a mini-ballet routine to the Disney song "Every Girl can be a Princess."
Maclaren and Dabney danced a petite-ballet routine to an instrumental version of "Part of your World" from Little Mermaid.

The girls had only been dancing with this studio since January - it's hard to move studios mid-year, and especially hard when practices weren't able to happen in person due to a pandemic.  I'm very impressed with the poise and grace and flexibility these girls all showcased this season.
We're proud of our dancers!

Family Weekend - Hocking Hills

We love getting together with family.
After months of home-quarantining and social distancing during this season of Covid-19, time with extended family is even more precious.

We are so thankful this weekend away was able to happen.
24 family members in a cabin at Hocking Hills State Park:
grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins

Thank you Gramma and Grampa for making this weekend possible for us all.

Strawberries

This has been a different summer for everyone, but we were glad to get out of the house and outside for one of our summer traditions - strawberry picking!

*and thankful for a local farm open to pickers during the coronavirus pandemic.

9 hard-working pickers in the hot summer sun, test-tasting along the way, filled two large boxes of delicious berries in record time.  The berries were eaten fresh by our crew before we had the chance to preserve any as jams or sauces.  Yummy!

(littlest baby sister tagged along in the front-carrier with mama ;)

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day Mike!

Our beautiful family is led by a wonderful man - we are thankful for him :)

We are grateful for our fathers and grandfathers who loved us greatly, taught us well, and were our examples.
We are thankful to father friends and mentors who have walked with us, challenged us, encouraged us, and inspired us.
We are grateful to the first fathers of our children - the men who gave them life and loved them from the beginning - the men we grieve for, the men who will always be important in the lives of our children.
We love you all.

Happy Father's Day.

This Father's Day, the kids pooled their money to purchase AirPods for Mike, and gifted him with a stack of homemade cards - he is loved :)

Driver

Our world just changed in a new way . . . we have a DRIVER!

Hendrick had lots of extra practice preparing for this moment thanks to our Minnesota to Ohio move.  -30 hours of Drivers Ed classes in Minnesota
-MN Learners Permit in February 2019 (15th birthday)
-50 hours of In-Car practice
-Move to Ohio
-Approval granted for MN Drivers Ed to count for 24 hours of OH Drivers Ed
-Turned 16 (February 2020)
-In-Car Lessons in Ohio early March 2020
-OH Learners Permit in March 2020
-Driver's Test scheduled
-DMV shut down indefinitely due to Covid-19

Three months later . . . thanks to his persistence, Hendrick was the FIRST person in our county to take his Driver's Test, and be issued a DRIVER'S LICENSE!!!!

Congratulations Hendrick!

This was a long road with many delays and snags, but his persistence and patience paid off.
We're so proud of him.
And we're really excited about what this means for our whole family to have a new driver.

I'm looking forward to him being able to drive Tesfaye to his early morning XC practices . . . he's looking forward to getting a job now that he has the flexibility of independent car transportation!
